Can You Freeze Carrot Puree?

Making carrot puree is one of the many ways to use up an abundance of carrots. It can have many uses such as an ingredient in soups and smoothies, a side dish and it is a perfect first food if you’re planning to start weaning a baby. If you’ve made too much, you may be wondering whether you can freeze carrot puree and preserve it for eating at a later date.

Carrots are a versatile vegetable, hight nutrients such as vitamin C and a great way to get one of your five a day. They can be roasted, boiled or steamed as well as being made into soups and purees.

Carrot puree makes a great alternative to using grated carrot in sweet recipes such a Moist Pureed Carrot Cake and Carrot Muffins

Can You Freeze Carrot Puree?

Yes, you can freeze carrot puree. Freezing doesn’t affect the taste of the carrot puree but it can be a little bit watery once defrosted.

However, when reheated until piping hot I often find this evaporates some of the water and of course of the puree is being added to a soup or smoothie it isn’t an issue anyway.

If you’ve made carrot puree it should last for three to four days in the fridge. However, if you’re fairly certain you won’t eat it, you may want to consider freezing it sooner rather than later.

How To Freeze Carrot Puree (and Other Pureed Vegetables)

When the carrot puree has fully cooled, it can be prepared to go into the freezer. This method works for pureed carrots but could also be used for other vegetable purees.

My advice is to freeze the carrot puree in small or individual portions as freezing a large container/portion can take a long time to defrost when the time comes.

If you’ll be using the carrot puree as baby food an ice cube tray is a great way to freeze very small portions and only remove what you need from the freezer at each meal

  1. Spoon the carrot puree into a plastic freezer container, ziplock bag or ice cube tray allowing a small amount of room for expansion – carrot puree has quite a high water content.
  2. If using an ice cube tray you may want to flash freeze for a few hours until the carrot puree is solid and then pop the cubes into a freezer bag so the ice cube tray can be used for other things.
  3. Label and date the carrot puree – there’s nothing worse than trying to guess what’s in a tub in the freezer and getting it wrong! You could also mention if you’ve added other ingredients to the puree such as herbs or stock.

How Long Does Carrot Puree Last In The Freezer?

Carrot puree will keep well in the freezer for around three months. It will be safe to eat after this date but might not be the best quality, so ideally it should be used up within the time frame.

How To Defrost Carrot Puree

My recommendation is to defrost the carrot puree in the refrigerator overnight and this method should work with most types of vegetable puree.

However, it can also be defrosted in the microwave using the standard defrost setting, or in a pinch, slowly defrosted in a pan on the hob.

If defrosting a few cubes from an ice cube tray these can be defrosted on the countertop as they only take around an hour to thaw.

How To Reheat Carrot Puree

For speed, I tend to reheat carrot puree in the microwave for a few minutes on the highest setting. Stir once or twice during this process to ensure there are no hotspots.

The carrot puree could also be reheated on the hob in a small pan. Stir it often and ensure it is piping hot before serving.
