Bread and butter pudding is a traditional British dessert made with buttered slices of bread, milk, eggs, sugar and dried fruit.
Bread pudding can be either sweet or savoury, is often made with brown bread, and may include ingredients such as suet, spices or syrup. It is commonly served with a sauce such as custard, caramel or rum sauce.

Bread pudding should always be completely cool before freezing.
- Cut it into individual portions if you’d like to defrost smaller amounts at a time.
- Wrap each portion well in cling film, or freeze the whole pudding in its baking dish if it’s freezer-safe.
- Label and date before placing it in the freezer.
How Long Does Bread Pudding Last In The Freezer?
Bread pudding can be frozen for up to 3 months.
It will still be safe to eat after that, but the texture and flavour may begin to deteriorate and freezer burn becomes more likely.
How To Defrost Bread Pudding
The best way to defrost bread pudding is overnight in the fridge.
If you’re short on time, you can thaw individual portions at room temperature for up to 4 hours before refrigerating until needed.
A whole bread pudding may need up to 24 hours to thaw completely in the fridge.
How To Reheat Bread Pudding
Bread pudding can be reheated in either the microwave or the oven, or enjoyed cold if you prefer.
Individual portions can be reheated in the microwave on high for around 45 seconds, adding extra time if needed until piping hot.
For a whole bread pudding, reheat in a 160°C oven for around 30 minutes, covering with foil to prevent the top from over-browning.
Always ensure the pudding is piping hot before serving.
