Can You Freeze Burrata?
Burrata has become incredibly popular over the last few years, thanks to its rich, creamy centre and delicate milky flavour. If you’ve bought more than you can use, you might be wondering whether it’s suitable for freezing.
Unfortunately, burrata is one of the few cheeses that really doesn’t respond well to being frozen.
What Is Burrata?
Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese with an outer shell made from mozzarella and a soft, creamy centre filled with stracciatella and cream.
It’s delicious served simply with tomatoes, fresh basil and olive oil, but also works well on pizzas, pasta dishes, salads and toasted sourdough.
For the best flavour and texture, burrata is best served at room temperature, so it’s worth taking it out of the fridge around 30-60 minutes before serving.
Can You Freeze Burrata?
Technically, yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Because burrata has such a high moisture content, freezing dramatically changes its texture. Once thawed, the creamy centre often becomes watery and grainy, losing the luxurious texture that makes burrata so special.
If possible, it’s far better to enjoy burrata fresh.
Does Burrata Freeze Well?
No.
Unlike many other cheeses, burrata simply isn’t suited to freezing. Even though it remains safe to eat, the texture deteriorates enough that most people find it disappointing after thawing.
How Long Does Burrata Last In The Fridge?
Burrata is at its best on the day it’s made, but supermarket burrata will usually keep for 1-2 days in the fridge once purchased.
Always store it in the refrigerator and follow the use-by date on the packaging.
How Should You Store Burrata?
Keep burrata refrigerated until you’re ready to eat it.
If you’ve already opened the packaging, transfer any leftovers to an airtight container and use them as soon as possible.

How To Use Up Leftover Burrata
Since freezing isn’t recommended, it’s worth finding ways to use up any leftovers while they’re still fresh.
Burrata is delicious:
- Torn over pizza after baking.
- Stirred through warm pasta.
- Added to tomato or peach salads.
- Served on toasted sourdough or crostini.
- Spooned over risotto.
Final Thoughts
Burrata is one of those foods that’s best enjoyed fresh. While it can technically be frozen, the creamy centre loses the texture that makes it so special, so it’s usually better to buy only what you’ll use within a day or two.
