Can You Freeze Cooked Sausages?
Whether you’ve cooked too many sausages for breakfast, have leftovers from a barbecue or simply want to get ahead with meal prep, freezing cooked sausages is an easy way to reduce food waste.
I freeze cooked sausages fairly regularly. If we’ve got a few left after dinner, or a packet is close to its use-by date, I’ll often cook them first and pop them in the freezer. They’re brilliant for quick lunches, pizzas, pasta dishes and sausage sandwiches.
Can You Freeze Cooked Sausages?
Yes, you can freeze cooked sausages for up to three months.
Whether they’ve been grilled, fried, baked, barbecued or cooked in the air fryer, cooked sausages freeze very well. Once defrosted they can be reheated or added straight into another cooked dish.
If you’ll be eating them within the next couple of days, there’s no real need to freeze them, as cooked sausages will keep well in the fridge. Otherwise, freezing is an excellent way to make sure they don’t go to waste.
My Tips For Freezing Cooked Sausages
I’ve found cooked sausages freeze best when they’re frozen in the way you’ll use them later.
For example, if I know they’re destined for homemade pizza or a pasta bake, I’ll slice them into rounds before freezing. If I’m planning sausage sandwiches or breakfast muffins, I either leave them whole or slice them lengthways instead.
Freezing them in portions also means I can just take out what I need rather than defrosting an entire batch.

How To Freeze Cooked Sausages
Freezing cooked sausages couldn’t be much easier.
- Allow the sausages to cool completely after cooking.
- Leave them whole or slice them depending on how you plan to use them.
- Place them into a freezer bag or airtight freezer-safe container.
- Label with the contents and freezing date.
- Freeze for up to three months.
How Long Can You Freeze Cooked Sausages?
Cooked sausages keep their best quality for around three months in the freezer.
They’re usually still safe to eat after this, provided they’ve remained frozen, but you may notice the flavour and texture begin to deteriorate. They may also become more susceptible to freezer burn if they haven’t been wrapped well.
How To Defrost Cooked Sausages
The safest way to defrost cooked sausages is overnight in the fridge.
If you’re in a hurry, you can use your microwave’s defrost setting, but because this starts warming the sausages, they should be reheated immediately afterwards.
Smaller portions or sliced sausages thaw much faster than whole batches, which is another reason I prefer freezing them in meal-sized portions.
How To Reheat Cooked Sausages
Cooked sausages can be reheated in several different ways.
- In the oven, covered with foil to prevent them drying out.
- In a frying pan over a medium heat.
- In the microwave for a quick lunch.
- In the air fryer for a slightly crisp finish.
Whichever method you choose, make sure the sausages are piping hot all the way through before serving.
If you’re adding sliced sausages to a pasta sauce, casserole or pizza, they’ll simply heat through as the rest of the dish cooks.
Can You Freeze And Reheat Cooked Sausages?
Yes. As long as the sausages were cooled and frozen safely after cooking, they can be defrosted and reheated successfully.
Just remember they should only be reheated once.
Can You Refreeze Cooked Sausages?
This depends on how they were frozen.
If you cooked raw sausages, you can freeze the cooked sausages, even if the raw sausages had previously been frozen and safely defrosted in the fridge.
However, if the sausages have already been cooked, frozen, defrosted and reheated, they shouldn’t be frozen again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Freeze Cooked BBQ Sausages?
Yes. Leftover sausages from a barbecue freeze just as well as oven-cooked or fried sausages.
Just make sure they haven’t been sitting outside for several hours before freezing, especially during warm weather.
Can You Freeze Cooked Sausage Slices?
Yes. I quite often slice cooked sausages before freezing, but how I cut them depends on what they’re for.
Sausage rounds are perfect for homemade pizza, pasta dishes and casseroles, whereas I’d keep them whole or slice them lengthways if I know they’re going into a sandwich or breakfast muffin later on.
Freezing them ready to use saves time later and means they defrost more quickly too.
Can You Freeze Cooked Sausages Before Their Use-By Date?
Absolutely.
If you’ve got raw sausages that are approaching their use-by date, cooking them first and then freezing them is a great way to avoid food waste. It’s something I do quite often if I know we won’t get round to eating them in time.
Can You Freeze Cooked Sausages In Gravy?
Yes. Sausages in onion gravy freeze very well.
Allow the dish to cool completely before transferring it to freezer-safe containers, leaving a little room for the gravy to expand as it freezes.
Can You Freeze Air Fryer Sausages?
Yes. It doesn’t matter whether the sausages were cooked in the air fryer, oven, frying pan, under the grill or on the barbecue. Once cooled, they can all be frozen using exactly the same method.
