Can You Freeze Canned Soup?
One of the best things about canned soup is that it’s a store cupboard staple that lasts for ages. It’s perfect for a quick lunch, an easy supper or even taking away on camping trips.
Once you’ve opened the can though, you might be wondering can you freeze canned soup?
The good news is yes, you can. Whether you’ve opened the wrong flavour, only eaten half the can or simply have some leftovers, freezing canned soup is a great way to prevent food waste.
Can You Freeze Canned Soup?
Yes, you can freeze canned soup once it’s been opened.
You can even freeze it after it’s been heated up, provided it’s cooled quickly before going into the freezer.
Most canned soups freeze really well and you’ll notice very little difference in taste or texture once they’re reheated.
Just remember never to freeze soup inside the can itself. Transfer it to a freezer-safe container first.
Does Canned Soup Freeze Well?
Yes, canned soup freezes very well.
Most tomato-based, vegetable and broth-based soups freeze with very little change in texture.
Cream-based soups also freeze well, although they can occasionally separate slightly after thawing. A good stir while reheating usually brings them back together and I sometimes add a splash of milk or cream if needed.
Can You Freeze Tomato Soup?
Yes, canned tomato soup freezes brilliantly.
Whether it’s homemade or from a tin, tomato soup is one of the easiest soups to freeze.
Can You Freeze Cream Of Mushroom Soup?
Yes, cream of mushroom soup can also be frozen.
Because it contains dairy, it may separate slightly after thawing, but don’t panic. Simply stir well while reheating and, if needed, add a splash of milk or cream to improve the texture.
How Long Does Opened Canned Soup Last In The Fridge?
If you know you’ll eat it within a few days, there’s no need to freeze it.
Once opened, canned soup will usually keep for 3-4 days in the fridge.
Transfer it to an airtight container first rather than storing it in the opened can, as this helps preserve the flavour.

How To Freeze Canned Soup
Freezing canned soup is really easy.
I normally freeze it in single portions as they’re perfect for a quick lunch and defrost much more quickly.
Once the soup has cooled:
- Pour it into freezer-safe containers, freezer bags or suitable glass jars.
- Leave a little space at the top to allow for expansion during freezing.
- Seal well.
- Label and date each portion before placing it in the freezer.
How Long Can You Freeze Canned Soup?
Canned soup will keep in the freezer for around three months.
It’ll still be safe to eat after that if continuously frozen, but the flavour and texture may gradually begin to decline.
How To Defrost Canned Soup
The safest way to defrost canned soup is overnight in the fridge.
If you’re short on time, you can also use your microwave’s defrost setting before reheating immediately.
How To Reheat Canned Soup
There are two easy ways to reheat frozen canned soup.
Hob
This is my preferred method because it’s easy to stir as it heats and you can adjust the consistency if needed.
If the soup seems a little thick after freezing, simply stir in a splash of water, milk or cream depending on the type of soup.
Microwave
Heat on full power in short bursts, stirring regularly until the soup is piping hot all the way through.
Always ensure the soup is thoroughly reheated before serving.
Top Tips For Freezing Canned Soup
- Never freeze soup in the original can.
- Freeze in single portions for quicker defrosting.
- Leave room for the soup to expand as it freezes.
- Stir creamy soups well during reheating.
- Label every container with the freezing date.
