After several trips to the U.S.A we are totally sold on sausage gravy. We often make it for breakfast at the weekends (along with American style biscuits, which are basically scones) and I also really like it as a sauce for pasta. This post takes a look at whether you can freeze sausage gravy.

Can You Freeze Sausage Gravy?

After several trips to the U.S.A, we are totally sold on sausage gravy.

We often make it for breakfast at the weekends with American-style biscuits (which are much closer to what we would call scones here in the UK).

I also love using sausage gravy as a sauce for pasta when I want something a little different.

If you’ve made too much or want to prepare ahead, you might be wondering: can you freeze sausage gravy?

The good news is that yes, you can freeze sausage gravy, and it freezes really well.

What Is Sausage Gravy?

Sausage gravy is a popular American breakfast dish, especially in the southern United States.

It is made by cooking loose sausage meat (removed from the casing) and using the leftover sausage fat to make a roux with flour. Milk is then added to create a creamy sauce, along with seasonings such as black pepper.

The cooked sausage is added back into the sauce to finish the dish.

Sausage gravy is very different from the brown gravy we would usually serve with a roast dinner here in the UK, but it is equally delicious.

How Long Does Sausage Gravy Last In The Fridge?

Sausage gravy will usually last for 3-4 days in the fridge.

If you know you won’t use it within this time, freezing is a great way to preserve it instead of letting it go to waste.

Can You Freeze Sausage Gravy?

Yes, you can freeze sausage gravy.

Sausage gravy freezes well and doesn’t lose much flavour or texture after freezing.

You may notice that the sauce looks slightly separated or split when it comes out of the freezer, but don’t worry. Once it has been gently reheated and stirred, it should come back together.

You can also freeze sausage gravy made using sausage that was previously frozen. Once the sausage has been cooked, it is safe to freeze the finished dish.

Sausage gravy is actually ideal for batch cooking, as you can make a larger amount and freeze portions ready for quick breakfasts.

Can You Freeze Sausage Gravy Made With Milk?

Yes, you can freeze sausage gravy made with milk.

Creamy sauces can sometimes change texture slightly after freezing, but sausage gravy reheats well. Stirring while reheating helps bring the sauce back together.

Can You Freeze Canned Sausage Gravy?

While this isn’t something we typically have here in the U.K I have it on good authority from friends in the U.S. that yes, canned sausage gravy can be frozen once opened.

If you don’t think you’ll use it within a few days, transfer it to a freezer-safe container and freeze it instead.

Can You Freeze Biscuits And Gravy?

Yes, you can freeze biscuits and sausage gravy.

Personally, I prefer freezing them separately. This means the biscuits can be reheated in the oven, helping them stay fluffy, while the sausage gravy can be reheated on the stovetop.

However, you can freeze them together if needed, especially if you’re freezing leftovers where the gravy has already been poured over the biscuits.

The biscuits may become a little softer after freezing, but they can still be reheated and enjoyed.

How To Freeze Sausage Gravy

Freezing sausage gravy is simple.

I recommend freezing it in portions, especially if you usually eat it for breakfast, as this means you can remove exactly what you need.

  1. Allow the sausage gravy to cool completely.
  2. Divide into freezer-safe containers or freezer bags.
  3. Leave a little space at the top as the gravy will expand slightly when frozen.
  4. Label and date before placing into the freezer.

If you’ve made a large batch, separating it into smaller portions will also help it cool more quickly before freezing.

How Long Does Sausage Gravy Last In The Freezer?

Sausage gravy will keep in the freezer for around 3 months.

It will still be safe to eat after this time if it has remained frozen, but the flavour and texture may start to deteriorate.

How To Defrost Sausage Gravy

The best way to defrost sausage gravy is overnight in the fridge.

If you’re planning to have it for breakfast, remember to take it out the night before.

Larger portions may need longer to thaw fully.

Once defrosted, sausage gravy should be used within 2-3 days, provided it was frozen soon after being made.

How To Reheat Sausage Gravy

The best way to reheat sausage gravy is on the stovetop.

Place the gravy into a saucepan and warm gently over a low heat, stirring regularly.

After freezing, you may find the sauce is thicker than before. Simply add a splash of milk or water until it reaches your preferred consistency.

You can also reheat sausage gravy in the microwave.

Heat in short bursts, stirring between each one to prevent hot spots. The time needed will depend on your microwave and portion size.

Always ensure the sausage gravy is piping hot before serving.
