Can You Freeze A Roast Dinner?

While roast dinner remains a very popular meal, it can be one that takes quite a lot of effort to prepare.

It’s also one of those meals where it’s easy to cook far more food than you actually need, especially if you’re feeding family or hosting a special occasion.

If you have leftovers after a Sunday roast, Christmas dinner or a family gathering, you might be wondering whether you can freeze a roast dinner to enjoy another day.

The good news is that you can!

Can You Freeze A Roast Dinner?

Yes, you can freeze a roast dinner.

Freezing leftover roast dinner is a great way to prevent food waste and means you can have a homemade meal ready for a busy day when you don’t have time to cook from scratch.

You can freeze a roast dinner made with any type of meat, including:

  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Lamb
  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Gammon
  • Pigs in Blankets

You can also freeze the other components of your roast dinner, including vegetables, gravy and Yorkshire puddings.

Some parts of a roast dinner do freeze better than others. For example, roast potatoes can lose some of their crispiness after freezing and reheating, while gravy can sometimes look slightly watery when defrosted.

However, these changes are usually minimal and shouldn’t stop you from freezing your leftovers.

Can You Freeze Christmas Dinner?

Yes, you can freeze Christmas dinner.

In fact, Christmas dinner is one of the meals that often creates the most leftovers, making it a great candidate for freezing.

Leftover turkey, roast potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, gravy and other Christmas dinner components can all be frozen so you can enjoy them another day.

Freezing Christmas dinner leftovers is also a great way to avoid wasting food (and save money!) after the festive period.

Can You Freeze A Plated Roast Dinner?

Yes, you can freeze a plated roast dinner.

This can be a really convenient option if you have leftover portions that are already prepared and ready to go.

Make sure the roast dinner has fully cooled before freezing and cover it well before placing it in the freezer.

You can use a freezer-safe container, foil tray or suitable wrapping depending on what works best for you.

What Parts Of A Roast Dinner Can You Freeze?

Most parts of a roast dinner can be frozen, although some ingredients may change slightly in texture.

Can You Freeze Roast Meat?

Yes, roast meat can be frozen.

Beef, pork, lamb, chicken and turkey can all be frozen once cooked.

For the best results, slice the meat before freezing so you can remove only the amount you need rather than having to defrost a whole joint.

Can You Freeze Roast Potatoes?

Yes, you can freeze roast potatoes.

However, they may not be quite as crispy once they have been frozen and reheated.

For the best results, reheat them in the oven or air fryer rather than the microwave to help them crisp back up.

Can You Freeze Roast Vegetables?

Vegetables with a higher water content may become slightly softer after freezing, but they can still be used as part of another meal.

How To Freeze A Roast Dinner

There are a few different ways you can freeze a roast dinner.

You can freeze all of the components together in one container, creating your own ready-made freezer meal.

Alternatively, you can freeze the different parts separately. For example, you might freeze the meat in one container, vegetables in another and gravy separately, depending on what you have leftover.

Freezing components separately can be useful as it gives you more flexibility when you come to use them.

Before freezing, make sure your roast dinner is completely cold.

Place the roast dinner into a suitable freezer-safe container or wrap well if freezing on a plate.

Add a label with what the meal is and the date it was frozen. This makes it much easier to keep track of what you have in your freezer and when it needs to be used.

How Long Will A Roast Dinner Keep In The Freezer?

A roast dinner will keep in the freezer for around three months.

It will still be safe to eat after this time, but the quality may start to reduce. You might notice changes to the flavour, texture or see signs of freezer burn.

How To Defrost A Roast Dinner

For the best results, a roast dinner should be defrosted before reheating.

Remove it from the freezer the night before you plan to eat it and allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight.

Larger portions may need longer to fully defrost.

If you have frozen a roast dinner on a plate, remember that not all plates and dishes are suitable for going straight from the freezer into a hot oven. Extreme temperature changes can cause some dishes to crack or shatter.

How To Reheat A Roast Dinner

There are a few different ways to reheat a roast dinner once defrosted – personally I always recommend defrosting first for the best results.

The microwave is usually the quickest option, especially for individual portions. Cover the dish and heat until the food is piping hot all the way through.

You can also reheat a roast dinner in the oven. Cover the dish to prevent the food from drying out or burning before it has heated through.

Some parts of the meal, such as Yorkshire puddings, may need less time to reheat than the rest of the dinner, so you may want to remove them and heat them separately.

Always make sure your roast dinner is piping hot before serving.

When reheating food, you can use a digital food thermometer to check it has reached 75°C for at least 30 seconds or 80°C for at least 6 seconds.

You should only freeze, defrost and reheat a roast dinner once.

Top Tip: Even if your roast dinner was frozen with gravy, making some extra fresh gravy when reheating can help make it taste more like a freshly cooked meal.
